Differential Thermal Analysis Using High Temperature Susceptibility Instruments

Measurements of susceptibility as a function temperature are an important, standard method quantifying sample's magnetic mineralogy. These measurements used to identify the Curie/Néel temperatures constituent minerals and show evidence thermally induced oxidation formation minerals. For these reasons, High Temperature Susceptibility Bridge (HTSB) is common instrument in paleomagnetism laboratories around world. Here, we argue that HTSBs can be perform simple differential thermal analysis, technique phase transitions exo-/endothermic reactions by measuring deviations from steady heating rate. Because designed heat samples at relatively constant rate, measurement obtain similar information, albeit crude, about taking place. vivianite, goethite, maghemite, compare curves sample blank run, DTA-analogous information. In case goethite identified do not have corresponding expression susceptibility, demonstrating this approach expands utility piece equipment. We estimate minimum enthalpy detectable their mass dependence. Additionally, successful detecting dehydration vivianite mixed mineralogy natural sample.
